Note: Students must be able to play a jazz instrument or voice

Jazz Improvisation Workshop (Music 251) is a student-directed environment for jazz and rock-style improvisation in a small combo setting. The improvisation skill levels range from beginning to advanced. The ensembles are determined by enrollment which differs every semester.

The class will cover appropropriate scales, rhythm, chords and melodic techniques used in contemporaty improvisation.

The class is repeatable 3 times.

Upon completion of the class the student will be able to:
1) apply the concepts of melodic, rhythmic and chord voicings in an improvisation over a given harmonic background.

The student must be proficient on instrument and be able to read music well enough to complete given assignments.

The student must supply their own instrument.
