Lecture and Performance, 4 hours.

Prerequisite: Audition, Ability to play a jazz instrument required

This course offers practical experience playing in a large jazz band. Standard and special musical arrangements are rehearsed and performed with emphasis placed upon intonation, rhythmic accuracy, artistic expression and improvisation.

This course provides training in sightreading of jazz band literature and rehearsing of literature to develop ensemble balance, style and intonation. This course also includes on and off campus performances.

The Studio Jazz Band offers a progression from easy to more difficult standard, and special, literature of modern dance and studio jazz bands.

Participation in the Jazz Band a student will:
1) gain practice in sightreading of standard jazz band literature
2) be introduced to special jazz band arrangements representing various styles of modern dance and jazz band performance.

An entering student must audition and show proficiency on their chosen instrument
